Following with the humanly being fashion from Bajrangi our Bhaijaan takes a bigger leap than last time. Cross border was Pakistan last time around and this time its none other than mammoth China. Last time he had to cross borders, this time he uses his power of faith. 

\n

Having mastered thou art Salman is never preachy but tries hard to make way through our hearts in a lot of scenes especially the selection scene, some heart-wrenching moments post Interval, plus the anti-war message etc

\n

But does all of it sum up into a wholesome entertainment package expected out of a Salman or an Amir movie of late ?

Does it manage to fulfill the colossal expectations it comes with ?

Whether it rightly uses the power of Bhaijaan, the gandhigiri of Munnabhai or the scale of a Kabir Khan movie may not be as important than answering the question that what do you miss in this Salman movie ?

It takes an offbeat track - No Salmania for a change

\n

It doesn't have any trademark Salman dialogue to remember

\n

It has more songs to depict emotions rather than feel good scenes ( which are very few) and all I remember is the Sajan Radio song after the movie.

\n

It lacks the energy associated with a Salman movie. One thing which is so scary to even mention. Every time Sohail Khan is on screen you wait to see some dhamaka. Not only because he's on the war front but you wait for the real action happening on that front plus some scenes featuring him are really the plusses of the movie. My fingers trembled while I wrote that.

It's story is as linear as its main character Laxman Singh Bisht's daily schedule - cycle to village square to Guo's house and back.

\n

It doesn't match Bajrangi Bhaijaan on the entertainment or endearing level though even BB took a different route for a Salman entertainer and yet was endearing !

\n

Refer to Cases 'Koi Mil Gaya' and 'Eeshwar' have better written Childlike characters than the likes of Tubelight.

\n

And more importantly the much talked about scene - the great reunion of SRK and Salman Khan - the scene supposed to be magical - was very important from a narrative point of view but wasn't impactful at all...!

\n

See commenting on Salman's performance is futile as he is way bigger than his performance. However the only point is that we get to see more of Salman than the character Laxman Singh Bisht. He's not gnawed his teeth completely into it which is also attributed to the poor/ linear writing too.

\n

Presence of Sohail Khan has never helped as whenever the two are together movies have bombed badly except MPKK and Jai Ho ( one of the worst performers on Salman track record ). He pitches in an earnest performance in a movie where he's sometimes given reasons to outshine his big bro.

\n

Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub is a wonderful actor to watch and with every movie he's only growing.

\n

Om puri looks like uncle KFC sometimes but is endearing. RIP Om Puri - Mr. class act.

\n

The meant to be Chinese kid is endearing in the beginning but just loses his way in the second half

\n

Kabir Khan tries to play Salman card blindly this time but hope he comes back with aces in Tiger Zinda hai ! Even the war sequences are now WoW material. It the movie has arthouse roots it should not have commercial aspirations attached too... !

\n

But faith can move mountains and box office too - he has tremendous faith in Salman as do we have. This time fans might be disappointed a bit though !

\n

On the whole, TUBELIGHT come across as a colossal disappointment as it fails to engross the audiences due to its wafer thin plot. At the Box-Office, the movie will take a jumpstart due to Salman Khan’s star power and accelerate over the weekend and the extended weekend [due to the Eid festivities], post which, the business will see a sizeable drop.

Pritam’s Naach Meri Jaan and Sajan Radio are magical, as is Shah Rukh Khan’s cameo as magician, Go-Go Pasha. Aseem Mishra’s camera work is largely-breathtaking. When it comes to performances--Salman laughs and cries unselfconsciously, unraveling the lesser-seen side of his macho image. He cannot move mountains with his performance but he manages to keep the faith alive. Sohail is sincere. Zhu Zhu shows spunk and young Matin entertains. And, Om Puri reminds you of the mettle unsung heroes are made of.

Zeeshan, in fact, is particularly good as a knock-kneed meanie, but there's only that much he is allowed to do, as this film - and everyone in it - constantly makes way. It's the Salman Khan show, and here he is bobbing his head and widening his eyes, with all the expressiveness of a hurriedly drawn thumb-puppet. Faith may indeed move mountains.
